artiste visuelle

Juhyun Choi (born in Gyeongju, South Korea) is a visual artist working across drawing, printmaking, textile sculpture, shadow-based installation, and performance. After developing her practice in France, she later settled in Belgium, where she explores material memory, embodied presence, and the transformation of humble materials into hybrid beings and shadow ecologies.

Her work unfolds through hand‑sewn textiles, embroidered hair, modular forms, and light‑driven environments that create fragile encounters between bodies, silhouettes, and space. She has been an artist‑in‑residence at HIAP in Helsinki, the Institut Français (Hors les murs), and the Villa Marguerite Yourcenar.

Alongside her installation practice, she has published graphic novels with Cambourakis and Tanibis, and her illustrations have appeared in Le Monde, Le Monde diplomatique, Internazionale, Revue XXI, and The New York Times.

Hybridity

Juhyun Choi’s recent work develops along three parallel lines.

Exuvie explores material memory through textile beings shaped by light and shadow.

Abysses investigates the emergence of analog and digital image‑worlds from simple moving structures.

In parallel, she pursues new narrative research inspired by Korean folklore—figures such as the Dokebi and the Lady Fox—opening a more playful and imaginative dimension within her practice.

Haunting

Juhyun Choi’s work unfolds like an inner theatre, inhabited by shadows, memories, and shifting mythological figures. Whether through ink, thread, or the quiet movement of silhouettes, she shapes images touched by childhood, marked by Korean history, and carried by a persistent feminine memory. Her forms act like small talismans—fragile, attentive, and alive with the unseen.

Her art moves between the intimate and the ancestral, tracing rituals, scars, and animal‑spirits that linger at the edges of vision. Even when stories remain fragmentary, they continue to guide, to protect, and to heal.
